Updated Oct 5, 2015 at 9:28a ET Ohio State finished a closer-than-expected 34-27 win at Indiana on Saturday with many questions about what might not be quite right with the nation’s top-ranked team, but the Buckeyes seem to have figured out one of their problems. That would be generating big plays on offense. After totaling only three scrimmage plays that went for at least 20 yards in wins against Hawaii and Northern Illinois, Ohio State has posted 16 over the past two weeks. The Buckeyes had six against Western Michigan on Sept. 26 before breaking out for 10 last Saturday at Indiana. Running back Ezekiel Elliott logged three of them in Bloomington, breaking loose for runs of 55, 65 and 75 yards. Quarterback Cardale Jones contributed seven more in the passing game, hooking up with five different receivers for those big gainers. The Buckeyes had 10 explosive plays in the season-opening 42-24 win at Virginia Tech, which is still their highest-scoring game of the season. On the season, Ohio State is averaging 5.8 explosive plays per game, still down slightly from 2014 when they averaged 6.1 en route to the national championship.
