Ohio State WR Corey Smith (leg) out for year, Urban Meyer confirms

Urban Meyer’s already struggling offense will have one fewer weapon at its disposal going forward. Meyer announced Monday that the leg injury suffered by wideout Corey Smith in the Buckeyes’ 34-27 win over Indiana will end the senior’s 2015 season, 247Sports affiliate Bucknuts.com reported. A fifth-year player and former JUCO transfer, Smith appeared in four games in 2015 and could potentially apply for a medical redshirt. “He’s one of my favorite players” Meyer said. “There is a chance we can get one more year back. That’s to be determined.” After sitting out the Buckeyes’ season opener at Virginia Tech as one of four players facing a one-game suspension, Smith caught five passes for 62 yards over the team’s next four games, including a 22-yard reception against the Hoosiers prior to leaving the game. Smith was also a key member of the Buckeyes’ special teams units. After redshirting in 2013, Smith caught 20 passes for 255 yards in 2014. At a glance, the loss of Smith might not seem like a major one; he ranked eighth on the team in receptions before his injury. But of the seven players ahead of him, only Michael Thomas plays as a pure wideout rather than an H-back-receiver hybrid, or tight end, or tailback.
