Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer let quarterbacks Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett know that he was going to use a two-quarterback system before the team’s game against Maryland on Saturday, and both were happy with the idea, reports Austin Ward of ESPN. Meyer spoke to both Jones and Barrett privately in his office last Monday to discuss the idea of having Barrett, who is Jones’s backup, handle quarterback duties in the red zone. The new offensive plan seemed to pay dividends, as Ohio State pulled out a 49–28 win, putting up 499 yards of total offense. Jones had his best game of the season, finishing 21 for 28 passing with 291 yards and two touchdowns. Barrett proved to be almost unstoppable in the red zone, rushing for three touchdowns on 12 carries. “Coach Meyer kind of put it on the table just to us, not with the rest of the coaching staff, and he let us think about it for a couple hours, called us back up to the facility and then we were in the room with the offensive staff and him,” Jones said to ESPN. “We talked about it and he asked our opinions on it, and both of us were completely 100 percent down with the decision that he made. “It was a great call, and he proved to be right.” Meyer has not yet said if he plans to continue using Barrett in the red zone offense. • Heisman Watch: Contenders making up ground on LSU’s Leonard Fournette
