Ohio State football: Buckeyes will wear alternate black uniforms vs. Penn State

COLUMBUS >> Tradition runs deep in the Ohio State football program. But the Buckeyes will take a step away from tradition against Penn State on Oct. 17 when they will take the field in black uniforms and black-mette helmets – not the customary scarlet-and-gray attire. Coach Urban Meyer, whose roots in the program go back to his student-assistant days under then-coach Earle Bruce, gave the uniforms a thumbs-up – and sort of sounded surprised in himself that he would do so. “Nike came to us and said, ‘what do you think of this?’” Meyer said. “And my first reaction was ‘No way. No chance.’ then I looked and said, ‘Whoa!’ It looked pretty sharp.” Advertisement Alternate uniforms are not foreign to the Ohio State football program. Uniforms that get this far away from the traditional Buckeye uniforms is, though. OSU athletic director Gene Smith said the athletic department did not approve the original design presented by Nike, but once other elements were requested and added, the uniforms were given the OK.
