Hey Joe: MSU mailbag gears up for playoff rankings

(Well, except most of the weeks of the year, when it’s not football season. But never mind that.) With College Football Playoff rankings coming out Tuesday — the committee is intensely studying MSU special teams film as we speak! — it’s only right to start with some playoff-related talk. *Joe, my question pertains to how people “weigh” teams deserving of getting into the College Football Playoffs. Many/most (and I’m talking sports experts as well as the occasional fan) seem to place much more emphasis on the overall record vs. what certain teams have been doing recently (meaning, what their IMMEDIATE POTENTIAL is). Flash back a year ago toward the end of the season when so many Ohio State haters (I am an MSU alum, so I am certainly not a fan of OSU) were crying that simply because OSU lost early in the season to Virginia Tech, they shouldn’t be in the playoffs. Once OSU got in, I again read on blogs (yes, I know…take those with a grain of salt) about how Alabama would crush OSU, etc., etc.) It was just so obvious to me that Ohio State deserved to get in last year (yes, over Baylor and others). So back to my original question. What should the CFP Committee, the experts and the fans place a higher emphasis on? …
