UM’s Big Ten chances now hinge on Ohio State winning

U-M punter Blake O’Neill’s botched punt returned for a touchdown that night appeared it might cost the Wolverines their Big Ten championship chance, with the Spartans and Ohio State headed toward an undefeated matchup Nov. 21. But now that MSU lost to Nebraska, 39-38, tonight in Lincoln — on a controversial touchdown in which the Nebraska receiver re-entered the field of play but was judged to be forced out by officials — the Big Ten race re-opens for the Wolverines. If the Buckeyes beat the Spartans in Columbus in two weeks and the Wolverines win their next two over the Indiana and Penn State, U-M and OSU will play for the Big Ten East Division title Nov. 28 in Ann Arbor. U-M will still have one Big Ten loss, but if it saddles Ohio State with one that day, and Michigan would earn the Big Ten title game bid by virtue of the head-to-head victory. And they’re reveling in it. U-M tight end Jake Butt’s account tweeted as soon as the MSU game ended: “I knew God had our back. Lose on a fluke to little bro and that’s how they had to go down.
