OSU legend Jerry Lucas visits Bucyrus

A group of men gathered in the cafeteria at the Bucyrus Community Hospital. Lucas is one of the most respected sports figures in the history of Ohio. Growing up in Middletown, Lucas starred on the basketball court. He was named Ohio High School Player of the Year three times, was named to the First Team All-American team three times and was National Player of the Year twice. After high school, Lucas stayed home to be a part of the Ohio State University’s basketball team. The legend grew from there. He was a three-time All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year and a member of the national championship team in 1960. At OSU, he was named National Player of the Year twice and cemented his legacy as the leading rebounder in Big Ten history. From there, he went on to win a gold medal in the 1960 Olympic Games. He continued his playing career in the National Basketball Association for the Cincinnati Royals, San Francisco Warriors and New York Knicks. He is an NBA champion winning the title in 1973 with the Knicks. He is a seven-time NBA All-Star, All-Star Game MVP and a member of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time. He is also the first player in history to win a high school state championship, NCAA championship, Olympic goal medal and NBA championship in a career.
