Comparing Larry Brown’s SMU to Urban Meyer’s Ohio State

The Buckeyes earned a four seed in the College Football Playoff and subsequently dispatched top-ranked Alabama and Oregon to win a National Championship. However, few realize that the foundation of that championship team was actually built in 2012, during Urban Meyer’s first year with the team. Despite a highly publicized scandal involving trading game memorabilia for tattoos and other services that would eventually force starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor to leave school, Ohio State headed into 2012 with high expectations. They were banned from postseason contention, but under the tutelage of new head coach Urban Meyer, the Buckeyes looked to return to prominence. With sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller under center, Ohio State demoralized the Big Ten, utilizing a high octane offense to accomplish a 12-0 season. While they were kept out of the postseason in 2012, the high standard they set that season eventually laid the foundation for them to hoist the National Championship trophy just two years later. This is exactly the approach the SMU Mustangs need to take with their upcoming basketball season. SMU had has an off season riddled with scandal and turmoil, as they face the repercussions of numerous NCAA violations occurring over several years.
