Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott was so disgusted with his role in No. 3 Ohio State’s 17-14 loss to No. 9 MI State on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, that he said afterward that it was his last game in Ohio Stadium. As long as MI State can hold off Penn State at home next week, they’ll travel to the Big 10 championship game, which means Ohio State won’t have that extra chance to impress playoff committee voters. Monday, head coach Urban Meyer addressed the comments, saying that he and Elliott put the moment behind them and that he really couldn’t disagree with Elliott’s assessment. It’s not that the announcements weren’t expected, but they felt like salt in the wound so soon after MI State put a kink in the Buckeyes’ national championship plans. The Ohio State Buckeyes dug their own grave on Saturday in front of a record-setting crowd and the attention of the entire country. He said the junior running back, who announced following the game this is his past year at Ohio State, will not be punished or benched against the Wolverines. While Elliott was overzealous in publicly criticizing his coaches, there’s no reason to make this into something bigger than it is: a 20-year-old college football player letting his emotions get the best of him after perhaps the most frustrating game of his career. He had a streak of 15 straight 100-yard rushing games snapped. He followed that up with a Twitter post about his “last buckeye walk”. …
