A look at all 14 Michigan coaches’ debuts vs. Ohio State As Jim Harbaugh was quick to point out Monday, he and Urban Meyer won’t be tackling or blocking anybody on Saturday. Two of the best coaches in the nation will be confined to doing just that — coaching. But the Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry has been defined, in many ways, by the men on the sidelines. The Ten-Year War between Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes is the most obvious example, but names like Carr, Tressel and Cooper are all important to the story of the rivalry. Harbaugh has already left his mark on history of “The Game,” guaranteeing and delivering a victory over Ohio State as a player in 1986. But now, in his first year as the Wolverines’ coach, Harbaugh has a chance to stamp his arrival on the rivalry with a win. The Daily looked back at how previous Michigan coaches have done in their first game against Ohio State. Gustave Ferbert, 1897: In the first ever meeting between Michigan and Ohio State, Ferbert, a first-year head coach after captaining the Wolverines as a player, led Michigan to a 34-0 victory. A Daily article from that game, published on Oct. 18, 1897, two days after the game, described Ohio State like this: “The entire team played gentlemanly and not a single wrangle arose to mar the game.” Perhaps gentlemanly play and the absence of wrangles are two traditions better left to history. …
