Reviewing Ohio State QB commit Danny Clark’s visit to Michigan State last week

EAST LANSING — Quarterback Danny Clark has been committed to Ohio State for more than three years, but the 2017 recruit was on Michigan State’s campus last week along with several other prospects. ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren quoted Clark’s father in a tweet saying there’s “No story at all.” According to Jeff Clark, who runs a company called “Unrivaled Athlete Consulting,” his son Danny was with him at Michigan State but not visiting, via VanHaaren. “Just hanging with dad and his brother, Caden, who is being recruited.” And “Everything was cleared with OSU.” That’s all well and good, but the timing for the non-visit visit — with coach Mark Dantonio present among the recruits — is conspicuously suspicious. The day before Clark decided to come up to the Michigan State campus with other prospects, Texas A&M QB commit Tate Martell, a higher-rated 2017 quarterback, was reportedly on the Buckeyes campus. If Danny Clark was on the Michigan State campus to ponder his options should the Buckeyes recruit over him, what would be the harm? But if you’re Jeff Clark, and your son’s dream has been to attend Ohio State — indeed, the Archbishop Hoban standout has a block “O” tattooed on his shoulder — then downplaying the MSU visit is the way to go. Clark tweeted out a picture of his large tattoo on Friday (below) among a series of tweets that indicate he’s not ready for a break-up with the Buckeyes. There’s a chance Martell won’t flip to Ohio State, and the Buckeyes will settle with Clark. If not, Michigan State has a strong track record with Ohio players. Departing Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook, the school’s all-time leading passer, is from Ohio. …
