Woody Hayes is one of the most iconic names in Ohio State football history as he spent 28 years as the head coach of the Buckeyes. Not only is he a legendary coach, but his namesake has now been trademarked. It was reported on Thursday that the trademark, which was filed for earlier this year, had been accepted and the Buckeyes now own rights to the name. This is big for Ohio State as they already use his name for multiple things on campus, including their fieldhouse, Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Last year, the Buckeyes secured a trademark for current head coach Urban Meyer’s name. Rick Van Brimmer, director of trademark and licensing services at Ohio State said that they have been working toward a number of trademarks in recent years. “We’ve been using Woody’s image and name on products for years,” Van Brimmer told The Columbus Dispatch. “But we’ve had an increasing number of people using our marks. This helps us in the long run.” Hayes was with the Buckeyes from 1951-1978 and helped them win five national championships and 13 Big Ten championships.
