Saints take Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas in second round

One day after addressing the defense, the New Orleans Saints filled a big need on the offensive side of the ball by selecting Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas with the No. 47 pick of the second round. Thomas, a big-bodied pass-catcher at 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, caught 56 passes for 781 yards and nine touchdowns in Ohio State’s run-heavy offense last year, one year after leading the Buckeyes with 54 catches, 799 yards and nine scores in Ohio State’s run to the national chmpionship. New Orleans had a need at wide receiver after parting ways with legendary Saint Marques Colston in the offseason. Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead formed a good 1-2 punch for the Saints last season, but beyond Cooks, Snead and Brandon Coleman, the Saints don’t have another receiver on the roster who has ever been active for an NFL game. Thomas, who ran a 4.57 second 40-yard dash, is both a big body who can work the middle and a player who can stretch the field vertically, something the Saints’ offense has been missing.
