Why a backup QB’s season-ending ACL injury should concern Ohio State

Stephen Collier had been competing to be Ohio State’s backup QB. (USATSI) Ohio State will have J.T. Barrett back in 2016, but the depth chart behind him is a bit thinner now. Stephen Collier, a redshirt sophomore, has suffered a torn ACL. According to the school, he’ll “most likely” miss the entire 2016 season. Given the typical amount of time needed to recover from such an injury, the “most likely” designation is probably a bit on the optimistic side. (Not to mention, a backup quarterback even missing the vast majority of the season will most likely take a redshirt and is quite unlikely to see action until the following year). According to Eleven Warriors, which first reported this news, Collier likely suffered the injury during Ohio State’s spring game. While Barrett is basically a lock to be Ohio State’s starter once the season begins, Collier had been competing with redshirt freshman Joe Burrow for the backup job. Dwayne Haskins Jr., a four-star member of Ohio State’s 2016 recruiting class, will join the team this summer. While that would no doubt give Burrow an advantage over Haskins for the job, no matter who gets the gig, the Buckeyes will have two quarterbacks who have never played a down on the college level behind Barrett on the depth chart. For a team that’s already replacing so many key players on both sides of the ball, that’s something of a concern. …
