Does Rutgers have a gentleman’s agreement with Ohio State in recruiting?

PISCATAWAY — Rutgers coach Chris Ash and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer teamed up against a common enemy this week when they announced a joint camp at Farleigh Dickinson on the same day that Michigan is holding a camp at Paramus Catholic High. It’s no surprise that Ash and Meyer are joining forces. Ash spent the past two years as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State and he credits Meyer for preparing him for his first head coaching job. Since arriving at Rutgers, Ash has adopted many of Meyer’s core philosophies. But with both coaches competing in the Big Ten East Division, there is a limit to their alliance. Inviting Meyer, who is arguably the best recruiter in college football, into New Jersey for a camp is akin to letting the fox guard the henhouse. It was a calculated decision by Ash, but there is some risk involved because he said there isn’t a blanket gentleman’s agreement with Meyer about recruiting the same players. “It’s situational. Recruiting is recruiting,” Ash said. “There are guys, if they’re committed, I won’t go recruit. If there’s a situation where a kid is committed but continues to call us and there’s a connection, that might be a different deal. But at the end of the day, whether you have friends and relationships in this profession, you have a job to do and it’s to go bring players into your program. …
