Ohio State adds Joker Phillips to football staff

By Wendell Barnhouse Posted on June 30, 2016 Ohio State announced Thursday that it has hired former Kentucky coach Joker Phillips as a quality control assistant. In three years as Kentucky’s head coach, Phillips compiled a 13-24 overall record and was 4-20 in Southeastern Conference games. Phillips, 53, was the wide receivers coach at Florida when he committed a Level II recruiting violation during the “dead period” in January of 2014. Phillips met with a recruit and spoke with the recruit to obtain his contact information. After he was suspended by the school, he eventually resigned. Florida also stopped recruiting the player in question. Phillips was out of college football last season and was the wide receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns. Phillips also has been an assistant coach at Minnesota, South Carolina and Notre Dame. When he was hired by the Irish as the school’s receivers coach he replaced his current boss, Urban Meyer. He was Kentucky’s offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach from 2005-2009 before he was promoted to head coach to succeed Rich Brooks. In addition to Phillips, the Buckeyes also hired former Ohio University head coach Brian Knorr as a quality control assistant. Ohio State has also hired former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Greg Schiano as the Buckeyes’ defensive coordinator. Ohio State adds Joker Phillips to football staff Recommended for you
