RG scores 33 awards in ONPA contest

The Register-Guard received 33 awards, including 13 first-place honors, in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, announced at the group’s annual convention in Silverton on Thursday and Friday. The newspaper won the overall Sweepstakes Award for receiving the highest overall rating for a daily newspaper in the contest. The newspaper staff’s online coverage of Eugene’s Civic Stadium fire earned a first-place award in Best Online Coverage of Breaking News. The paper’s website, run by Deputy Managing Editor Carl Davaz, web editors Rob Denton and John Heasly, and News Editor Chris Frisella, won first place in both Best Overall Website and Best Web Design. The Graphics Department swept the Best Feature Photo and Best Sports Photo categories. In the Best Feature Photo category, photographer Brian Davies earned first for his “Balancing Act” photo of Michael Neururer traversing the 120-foot spill of Sahalie Falls on the upper Mc-Kenzie River on an inch-wide band of nylon slack line, and third for “Music Lesson.” In second place was former Register-Guard photographer Paul Carter’s “Art Walk.” In the Best Sports Photo category, photographer Andy Nelson earned first for his “Head over heels” shot taken during the NCAA Track & Field Championships of a…
