Jim Harbaugh offers no apologies for Twitter shots, other offseason back and forth

CHICAGO — Jim Harbaugh says he can admit when he’s wrong about something. But he’ll only apologize if he believes a “sorry” is truly necessary. During a Q&A session with reporters Monday at Big Ten media days, the topic of Harbaugh’s various tweets toward SEC head coaches and even Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith came up. One reporter asked Harbaugh why he made things so personal with Smith, who made a prior comment about satellite camps and how Ohio State doesn’t need them because the Buckeyes don’t need to “jumpstart” their program. “I would put that in the category of ‘if somebody shoots one over your bow, then you shoot one back over their bow.'” Harbaugh said Monday. “Usually, I subscribe to the ‘sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me’ philosophy. But when someone talks about somebody you love or something you love or makes a personal attack then you have the right to shoot one back over their bow.” Smith eventually offered an apology to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, who also spoke with Harbaugh about the situation and said he considered the matter closed back in March.
