Big Ten notes: Ohio State will be young this season

CHICAGO – Ohio State lost 12 players to the NFL draft after last season, and its senior class finished a four-year career with a 50-4 record, tying for the most wins over that span by an FBS school in NCAA history. However, when coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday that, “44 of our players, which is over half of our scholarships, are kids that never played in a game,” it was less of a lament, and more of a hopeful sign of what’s to come for the Buckeyes this season. “The issue would be if it was a non-talented young team,” Meyer said. “And that’s not the case at all. So it’s a very young team but talented. Probably the most critical coaching month that our staff – I’m speaking for myself – that I’ve ever been through. We have to get these guys ready.” One of the experienced hands returning is junior quarterback J.T. Barrett, who split the position last season with Cardale Jones but now has it all to himself.
