At the end of Urban Meyer’s media session Wednesday, the Cleveland Indians were on the verge of wrapping up the American League Championship Series.When informed of this, Meyer’s eyes lit up. The Ohio State coach got animated. He wanted an update right away. No doubt that he hurried into his office to watch the final out. Meyer grew up in Ashtabula in northeastern Ohio as a fan of the Indians (and Cincinnati Reds). In fact, he briefly thought he might play for his hometown team. He was a slick-fielding shortstop in high school, good enough to get the Indians’ attention before the 1982 draft. One day, he recalled during his radio call-in show Thursday, Meyer got a call from the Indians. Owner and CEO Gabe Paul wanted him to come to Municipal Stadium for lunch and a tour. “So my mother and I go down — my dad had to work — we had lunch and he says, ‘Boy, come with me,’” Meyer said.
