College Football Power Rankings: Clemson up, Ohio State down but not out


The Buckeyes are not dead — in a College Football Playoff sense. Not by a longshot. Not even close. This truth has to be stated because social media exploded Saturday with the insta-reaction to Ohio State’s loss to Penn State. One bridge jumper called it “horrific.” Another called the loss “unbelievable.” It was as if the Buckeyes had lost to a Pop Warner team — or worse, Rutgers. Can’t throw, they said. Can’t coach. Can’t see any way the Bucks will rebound to play in the CFP. Did they at times play Saturday night as if they were lacking a pulse? Absolutely. They were exposed in many ways as an offense that lacks a deep threat and a coach who made the wrong decision in crunch time. But … horrific? If we’ve learned anything in the BCS era (since 1998), next to nothing is decided in the third week of October. Alabama lost twice in November (2011, 2012) and won national championships. Since then, you might have noticed the championship field as doubled from two to four. Just two years ago, Ohio State lost at home to what turned out to be a 6-6 Virginia Tech in the second game…
