College Football Playoff rankings observations: Don't freak out about Ohio State being No. 6

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Thoughts on the first College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night. 1. The Buckeyes are fine: So don’t freak out about Ohio State coming in at No. 6 in the first College Football Playoff rankings. It matters because these are the playoff rankings, and they’re the only rankings that matter in this new era. But as selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt reiterated several times during his teleconference on Tuesday night: “There is a lot of football left.” A one-loss Texas A&M team found its way to No. 4 by virtue of beating four “winning teams” as Hocutt put it. Ohio State was part of that discussion as well, and even though the Buckeyes are No. 6, they’re in a fine position moving forward. Ohio State has two road wins over teams ranked in the top-15: No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 14 Oklahoma. The Buckeyes loss is to a team that the committee really likes right now, No. 12 Penn State.
