Ohio State football: Who will be the Buckeyes' next real Heisman Trophy candidate?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — When the final Heisman Trophy vote tallies are revealed on Saturday night, it’s possible an Ohio State player finds his name on the list. There are a lot of Heisman voters — more than 900 — maybe a few of them put J.T. Barrett’s name on their ballot. Maybe not. Whatever happens, the Buckeyes did not have a real Heisman candidate this year. There won’t be a Buckeye among the five players going to New York this weekend. There wasn’t an Ohio State player who captured that kind of national attention this year, even if it felt like Curtis Samuel should have garnered more of it. None of this is an indictment on Ohio State. There’s no direct correlation between having a Heisman candidate and winning championships.
