CINCINNATI — The first time Luke Fickell was named head coach of a major-college football team, it was thrust upon him. Indeed, he admitted, “I wasn’t ready for it.”The interim gig began on Memorial Day 2011, when he suddenly was put in charge at Ohio State after the forced resignation of Jim Tressel in the wake of the tattoos-for-memorabilia scandal. Fickell lasted eight months in the job, before OSU hired Urban Meyer and Fickell stepped back. On Saturday, when the long-time Ohio State assistant was named head coach at the University of Cincinnati, there were no second thoughts, no doubts.
