Ohio State's Meyer in favor of playoff as-is

COLUMBUS — Since the College Football Playoff’s inception in 2014, winning a national championship typically takes 15 games. In most cases — with this season’s Ohio State team serving as the lone exception — a program must gain a berth in the four-team playoff through 12 regular-season dates and a conference championship game, and, if admitted, win two more games against the country’s top teams. The system does not allow for all five major conference champions to play for a title. This season, Penn State won the Big Ten — the country’s best league, according to the CFP rankings — but still missed the cut because it lost twice. Naturally, the exclusion of conference champions has led to calls for an expansion to an eight-team field.
