Ohio State AD Gene Smith to replace Barry Alvarez on College Football Playoff selection committee

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State will have a presence on the College Football Playoff selection committee, according to a report from ESPN’s Heather Dinich. Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith will replace Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez on the selection committee, sources told Dinich. Alvarez is one of three committee members whose terms have expired. He’s served on the committee for the first three seasons of the playoff’s existence. The College Football Playoff is expected to officially name new members of the selection committee this month. The other members whose terms have expired are former Vanderbilt and Furman head coach Bobby Johnson, and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Smith, a Cleveland native who played college football and and briefly coached at Notre Dame, has been Ohio State’s athletic director since 2005.
