How Ohio State’s athletic apparel strategy has changed in two decades

Ohio State University football players and coaches wore Champion-branded products at the start of Coach John Cooper’s tenure in the late 1980s. There wasn’t much thought to it then.

“It wasn’t this strategic plan on what John’s going to wear each week,” said Rick Van Brimmer, assistant vice president of trademark and affinity management at Ohio State, whose office is profiled in this week’s Columbus Business First cover story. “We didn’t have a shoe contract, didn’t have an apparel contract. We just bought Champion’s stuff – that was what we bought.”
