One might think that the discussion of college-football recruiting rankings — in mid-June, no less — is either overkill or just plain silly. Of course, it’s a reflection of the cottage industry that recruiting has become. That beast must be fed, regardless of the calendar. At Ohio State University, it’s simply a reflection of how the program went from fading to juggernaut. At every stop — from Bowling Green to Utah to Florida and now at Ohio State — coach Urban Meyer has built his success around recruiting dominance. Sure, he’s an innovative thinker. His X-and-O knowledge is pretty darn good. He can motivate a group of young men to rally around a cause. But at Ohio State, many of the battles have been won at high school campuses, 7-on-7 tournaments and camps. Again, all things in recruiting can be proven or disproven.
