Ohio State football | Backup QB Burrow out indefinitely

Tim May The Columbus Dispatch @TIM_MAYsports Ohio State’s Joe Burrow, who had been competing to be the backup quarterback to J.T. Barrett, is out indefinitely after suffering a broken bone in his right hand, a team spokesman confirmed Wednesday. Burrow, a third-year sophomore from Athens, Ohio, underwent surgery on his throwing hand Tuesday after apparently suffering the injury in the Monday practice. The backup last year, he had been vying with redshirt-freshman Dwayne Haskins Jr. for the No.2 spot behind fourth-year starter Barrett. Now it appears to be Haskins’ job, with freshman Tate Martell the next option. Interestingly, Martell, a freshman who enrolled in January, had the black strip removed from his practice helmet just a few days ago, signifying he is ready to play if needed. The Buckeyes, ranked No.2 in both major preseason polls, open the season Aug.31 at Indiana.
