Ohio State loses backup QB Joe Burrow to broken hand

A little over a week before the season opener, Ohio State has lost its insurance policy at quarterback. Joe Burrow, the only QB on the roster behind starter J.T. Barrett with any game experience, broke a bone in his throwing hand Monday and will be out indefinitely, the school confirmed Wednesday morning. Burrow appeared in five games last season as a redshirt freshman, completing 22 of 28 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. With Barrett firmly entrenched atop the depth chart as long as he stays healthy, Burrow already had been mentioned as someone who could follow Mitchell Trubisky’s career path — waiting a long time for his shot in college before eventually having a chance at the NFL.
