Mike Dunbar has resigned as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator after two seasons on the job, the team announced this morning.
A news release stated that Dunbar stepped down to pursue other professional interests.
“Coach Dunbar has contributed a great deal to this program over the past two years and I would like to thank him for his efforts,” Golden Gophers coach Tim Brewster said. “I have a great deal of respect for Mike and I wish him nothing but the best.”
This isn’t a huge surprise, given Minnesota’s late-season slide and Brewster’s hiring of Tim Davis as offensive line coach and run-game coordinator three days after the regular season.
Davis’ arrival signaled a shift in offensive philosophy, as Minnesota goes away from the spread and returns to its roots as a power running team. The Gophers finished last in the Big Ten in rushing offense (105.8 yards per game), and Brewster shifted the run-game responsibilities from Dunbar to Davis.
Though Dunbar’s replacement likely will use elements of the spread, for which quarterback Adam Weber is a perfect fit, Minnesota will be more run-oriented going forward.
The 60-year-old Dunbar helped Northwestern finish fourth nationally in total offense in 2005 before leaving for Cal and then Minnesota.
