Wells continues quick recovery

COLUMBUS (AP) — What’s brewing today with the 2008 Ohio State Buckeyes …

BUCKEYES BUZZ: Guess maybe that foot wasn’t hurt so bad after all.

Chris “Beanie” Wells has responded with two 100-yard rushing games, topped by Saturday’s 168-yard performance in the win at Wisconsin, since coming back from that monthlong respite with a mysterious foot injury.

Wells sometimes calls it a foot injury, other times a toe injury. Coach Jim Tressel says he can’t read an MRI so therefore doesn’t know details about the injury, although he apparently wasn’t paying attention when his medical experts were spelling things out for him.

Wells said he was only about 75 percent healthy last week. Imagine what he’ll do when he is all the way back.

A year ago, of course, he rushed for 1,609 yards despite a nagging ankle injury and a broken bone in his hand.

Asked recently if he learned anything from playing last year with those injuries, he said, “I learned that being a running back — this just doesn’t go for me, it goes for all the running backs — you’re never going to be 100 percent throughout the season so it’s just something you’re going to have to deal with and roll with the punches.”

ANOTHER 3:30 START: The OSU at Michigan State game on Oct. 18 will kick off at 3:30 p.m., the Big Ten Conference announced on Monday. The game time was set by ABC, which will be carrying the game on a regional basis.

POLL DANCING: Anybody else shocked that Wisconsin loses twice in a row and still almost makes the Top 25? The Badgers are just a point behind unbeaten No. 25 Ball State in the latest media voting. Also, ponder this: four SEC teams (No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 LSU, No. 10 Georgia and No. 11 Florida) are still in front of Ohio State in the rankings, with another one (No. 13 Vandy) just a spot behind the Buckeyes.

THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE:  The Ohio State coaches voted, and here are the results of their picks for the players of the week from Saturday’s 20-17 win in Badgersland:

LB Ross Homan, who recovered a Badgers fumble and had a team-high 10 tackles, was the defensive player of the week; Wells won the honors on offense; and P A.J. Trapasso was the man on the special units.

Awards for scout-team members went to: RB James Georgiades on offense; LB Cedric White on defense; and DB Zach Domicone on special teams. The front-seven honoree on defense was DL Nader Abdallah, the OL of the week was OT Alex Boone, and sub DB Shaun Lane had the Jack Tatum hit of the week.

THE ENVELOPE PLEASE II: Big Ten honorees this week include three players the Buckeyes will be seeing before it’s all over.

Illinois QB Juice Williams was the offensive award winner for passing for 310 yards and two TDs and running for 121 yards and two more scores in a 45-20 win over Michigan. His teammate, LB Brit Miller, was the defensive choice with four tackles for a loss, two sacks and two passes broken up. Sharing special-teams honors were Michigan State K Brett Swenson (3-for-3 on field goals in a 16-14 win over Iowa) and Minnesota K Joel Monroe (3-for-4) in a 16-7 win over Indiana.
