What does the Oregon State upset over USC mean for Ohio State?
September 26, 2008 by chris
First off, if you were to tell me that Oregon State would beat USC, I would tell you that your smoking some really good stuff. I mean Cheech and Chong type stuff man. This upset was like Stanford of two years ago all over again. So, what does this upset mean for the Bucks? To be honest, I think it greatly hurts the Buckeyes chances for further advancement in the polls. It does However, Give Ohio State fans a little snicker to see USC is beatable, and their arrogance might have overwhelmed them. Also, this should give Penn State a little respect for their huge blowout win over Oregon State, and help the Big Ten’s reputation just a little bit.
This win for Oregon State should also further prove the point that anyone can be beat at any time. To say that the loaded teams like Florida, LSU, Georgia, USC, should blow all these little teams away is totally false. Upsets are clearly a part of the college game now simply because teams talent levels are getting closer as the NCAA limits recruitment to 25 scholarships.
The success of college football completely comes down to the team concept. As a former offensive lineman, It sometimes irritates me how running backs get all the credit, while the media completely forgets about the big guys up front. Did you see the holes the offensive line was opening up last night against USC? I mean I could have ran through some of them holes. But, when you woke up this morning it was all about the running back. Don’t get me wrong, he had an outstanding game, but did you hear anything about how USC’s defense was dominated up front by the big guys?
This further brings me to my beloved buckeyes. I can sit here and whine about all the things wrong with this team. From play calling, lack of leadership, and so on. But I don’t want to do that. I want Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes to watch film of the 2002 Buckeyes. That team had heart, and Todd Boeckman is every good as Craig Krenzel. The determining factor though is the 2002 team was just that, a team. I don’t know where this current Buckeye squad is headed. They are going to have their opportunities to prove themselves against Penn State, Wisconsin, and possibly Illinois. But, until they show me that they are tired of being the brunt of everyones jokes, and being called mediocre, we simply cannot call them a unified Ohio State Buckeye team. Sometimes, I think that maybe we should just get rid of these group of seniors and start over. But I am still hopeful that Coach Tressel will mix it up and get these men motivated. The big lopsided blowouts is really putting a bad taste in OSU fans mouths. We can only tolerate so much, then we will speak out. I think some of those fans were so frustrated that they wanted to take it out on someone, Unfortunately that was Todd Boeckman. What a class guy, I don’t think anyone has handled this any better than he has.
Hopefully we can learn something from this misery our football team has been in the last couple seasons. For some reason Big Ten championships are just not doing it for most fans. We want and expect more. Maybe that is unreasonable, but its the truth. We want to be successful against other big time college football teams, and until that happens we deserve to be the brunt of the haters jokes. The truth hurts sometimes, thats why they call it the truth.
