Who will win the Championship Belt?

July 30, 2008

Although this site tracks the championship belt from the 1971 Nebraska team, it is easy to show that the lineages from the 1936 Minnesota team converges, along with the lineage from the first game between Princeton and Rutgers.

Let us look at the last 10 teams to hold the belt after the bowls are over:
1999: Texas (Tennessee)
2000: FSU
2001: Miami (FL) (Oklahoma)
2002: Miami (FL)
2003:
2004: (LSU)
2005:
2006: Texas
2007: Florida
2008: Missouri (LSU)

6/10 agreement with the champion is not bad for such an ad hoc method. 2008 is the only time in the last 10 years where the champion had held the belt without finishing with it. Two of the four disagreements indicated the following year’s consensus champion.

Given that Missouri currently holds this belt, brandishing the names of so many stories teams in football history, Who will be holding it after this season is over?

I think Missouri will get upset by Illinois.
Illinois loses it to .
loses it to .
loses it to the national champion, whoever it is they play.

This is certainly more reasonable than, say:
Missouri losing it to Nevada
Nevada losing it to UNLV
UNLV losing it to CSU
CSU losing it to Utah

If by some fluke UNLV does get it, it will most likely end up in the hands of the BYU Utah winner.

Find the shortest route to your team below. Remember, the teams must play after the belt has been passed for your team to get the belt.
