Should Terrelle Pryor Play Basketball at Ohio State?
February 27, 2009 by feed · Leave a Comment
Terrelle Pryor was the No. 1 recruit for football last year. This year, he’s played great for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
However, Pryor also was one of the top in the nation for basketball.
He was ranked No. 15 in the nation as a shooting forward for Jeannette High School in Pennsylvania. He took his team to states and won the basketball state championship just like he did in…

A bit of Big Ten scheduling history this fall

After reading all the Big Ten scheduling snapshots, a friend tipped me off to a unique element of the league's non-league slate — Syracuse appears three times.
Big Ten teams make up three-fifths of Syracuse's non-league rundown, as the Orange host Minnesota and Northwestern and travel to Penn State. In an era when BCS teams rarely play more than two non-league games against foes from other BCS conferences, Syracuse's scheduling approach is rare.
When was the last time a team from another BCS conference played three Big Ten teams during the regular season?
Notre Dame does it every year — the Irish have contracts with Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue — but the program has more scheduling flexibility as an FBS independent.
I checked the schedules of several common Big Ten nonconference opponents from BCS leagues — Syracuse, Iowa State, Pitt, UCLA, USC — and found that UCLA faced Purdue, Wisconsin and Ohio State in consecutive weeks during the 1980 season. UCLA's run through the Big Ten nearly three decades ago appears to be the last time that this has happened.
According to the Big Ten, MAC member Ball State was the last FBS team to face three Big Ten teams in the regular season, as the Cardinals played Indiana, Purdue and Michigan in 2006. Arizona State faced three Big Ten teams in 2004, though the final meeting against Purdue came in the Sun Bowl.
Early schedule snapshot: Indiana

After a look at Illinois' near-complete schedule, it's time to examine Indiana, the only other Big Ten team without a finalized 2009 slate.
Here's what we know at this point about the Hoosiers:
NONCONFERENCE SCHEDULE
Sept. 5 Eastern Kentucky
Sept. 12 Western Michigan
Sept. 19 at Akron
Oct. 10 ???
My take: Indiana's non-league slate lost some flavor after South Florida rescheduled a 2009 trip to Bloomington for 2015 so it could face Florida State in Tallahassee this fall. Then again, the Hoosiers lost to two MAC teams (Ball State and Central Michigan) in 2008 and will have their hands full with Western Michigan and a trip to Akron. Last year's soft slate was set up for Indiana to return to a bowl game, but an easy opening stretch seemed to leave the team poorly prepared for Ball State in Week 3. Eastern Kentucky is a solid FCS program that produced new Purdue head coach Danny Hope and was knocked out of the playoffs last season by eventual national champion Richmond. It would be nice to see Indiana fill its final spot with a BCS program, but it could be tough at this late date.
BIG TEN SCHEDULE
Sept. 26 at Michigan
Oct. 3 Ohio State
Oct. 17 Illinois
Oct. 24 at Northwestern
Oct. 31 at Iowa
Nov. 7 Wisconsin
Nov. 14 at Penn State
Nov. 21 Purdue
Byes: Michigan State, Minnesota
My take: The road schedule is simply brutal, and Indiana has dropped eight consecutive games away from Memorial Stadium (7 road, 1 bowl), stretching back to Sept. 29, 2007. Indiana does catch Michigan fairly early on, and if the Wolverines are still finding their way, the Hoosiers could hang around in the Big House. The Hoosiers travel to Happy Valley for the second straight year, and they also visit an improved Iowa team and a Northwestern squad that won't take them lightly after last year's upset in Bloomington. The key is to survive September and October with something to play for and then take advantage of the November home games.
Indiana’s class is signed and sealed

The Big Ten's first full recruiting class is complete, as Indiana just issued a news release listing its 18 signees for 2009.
As expected, Indiana went heavily local with eight in-state prospects to go along with five from Ohio, two from both Illinois and Michigan, and one from Pennsylvania. Offensive line was the biggest recipient with four players, but Indiana also added two quarterbacks in Dusty Kiel and Edward Wright-Baker.
Indiana lost a few commits after a 3-9 season, but the damage appears to be limited. New athletic director Fred Glass gave head coach Bill Lynch a public vote of confidence in late November after rumors had increased about negative recruiting toward the program.
Here's the full list of incoming recruits, and here are some notes from the release:
- Adam Replogle will join his brother, junior linebacker Tyler, on the squad next season.
- Dimitrius Carr, Dusty Kiel, Colin Rodkey, Duwyce Wilson and Nick Zachery each reached their respective state semifinals in 2008. Zachery (2005-07) and Lawrence Barnett (2007) were both part of state championship teams in their careers. Barnett also won a basketball state title in 2007.
- Javon Cornley's brother, Jamelle, is a senior forward on Penn State's men's basketball team. If he plays football anything like his brother on the court, Indiana will be very pleased.
- The eight signees from Indiana make it 46 on the IU roster, accounting for 43.8 percent of the team.
- Seventeen of the 18 signees played at least two sports in high school.
