Who Will Lead Ohio State Buckeye Receivers in 2013?

It’s no secret that Ohio State didn’t finish the year with the air attack that they preferred. Some blame can be put on Braxton Miller as a first-year quarterback in a new system, and some blame has to be on the receivers—whether it was not creating enough separation or just running wrong routes. Either way, as a whole, improvement through the air is a must in order for Ohio State to flourish and reach its full potential in 2013. With every wide receiver who earned playing time last season returning, who will lead the Buckeyes in that department this upcoming season? The most popular pick, and rightfully so, would seem to be Corey Brown, who led the team in receiving yards last year with 669. Brown mostly played on the outside because the Buckeyes lacked a true playmaker in the slot position. Most expect him to line up in the slot in 2013 where more touches

Miller accounts for 3 TDs in Buckeyes’ spring game

CINCINNATI (AP) — Braxton Miller threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Scarlet to a 31-14 victory over the Gray on Saturday in the Ohio State spring game, played before 37,643 in the Cincinnati Bengals’ Paul Brown Stadium.

Corey Smith Will Start for Ohio State Buckeyes in 2013

Corey Smith was a junior college recruit from East Mississippi Community College that Urban Meyer brought in to compete for a starting spot right away. Programs like Ohio State don’t bring in junior college athletes to sit the bench. They bring them in because JC kids are proven, mature players who coaches think can instantly help at a position of need. Corey Smith will be that guy for the Buckeyes in 2013. Last season, Ohio State’s receiving corps had flaws in just about every category. There wasn ’t a game-breaker who could take a slant 70 yards for a touchdown. The position certainly lacked reliability, with all having had trouble catching the ball at some point in the season. Sure, maybe Corey Brown was playing a bit out of position and maybe Devin Smith was just young, but this is a group that needs to get better and Corey Smith can definitely patch some holes. Corey Smith has good size and 6’1″, 190 pounds. He possesses the ability to stretch defenses with his speed, …

WR Verlon Reed leaves the Buckeyes

After playing sparingly on offense as a redshirt sophomore last season, Reed and the Buckeyes mutually agreed to part ways over the weekend, a school spokesman confirmed on Monday morning.

Meyer leads Buckeyes to bittersweet unbeaten season

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Urban Meyer enhanced his reputation as one of the top coaches in the country by leading Ohio State to a 26-21 win in his first matchup against Michigan, completing an unbeaten season with the Buckeyes. Meyer, who came in and picked up the pieces after Ohio State’s disastrous 6-7 mark in 2011, was also saddled with the NCAA sanctions related to violations under previous head coach Jim Tressel, sanctions that will keep 12-0 Ohio State out of the Big Ten title game and any bowl game. “At this point in time, Ohio State can go and play with anybody in America,” said Meyer, the Ohio native who led Florida to two national titles. Ohio State earned the sixth unbeaten, untied season in school history. Meyer said the win over Michigan left him a little torn, however, knowing it was the end of the line for his 21 seniors. “I can’t get that out of my mind,” Meyer said. Junior wide receiver Corey Brown said the fate of the seniors was a huge motivator. “That’s …

Buckeyes say they respect but can’t stand Badgers

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — It used to be that Ohio State players despised their longtime enemies to the North, Michigan, and abided everybody else. No more. Now the Buckeyes also have a special level of dislike for the Wisconsin Badgers. Blame it on chippy, contentious games the past few years. Each side says the other’s fans are obnoxious. Both have accused each other of grandstanding after victories. Once just a blip on the schedule, now all of a sudden Wisconsin and Ohio State are bitter rivals. ”I don’t want to go on record saying that I hate Wisconsin more than Michigan,” Buckeyes wide receiver Corey Brown said, ”but I hate Wisconsin just as much as Michigan.” A lot of that emotion will bubble to the surface when they meet again on Saturday.

Miller leads No. 8 Buckeyes past Indiana 52-49

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Braxton Miller had all the offensive answers for No. 8 Ohio State on Saturday night. He ran for a 67-yard touchdown. He threw TD passes of 60 and 46 yards. He set up two Carlos Hyde touchdowns and threw a 46-yard TD pass that appeared to put the game out of reach, and Corey Brown recovered an onside kick to finally help the Buckeyes escape with a 52-49 victory at Indiana. By Miller’s standards, it was just another game. He finished 13 of 24 for 211 yards with two TDs and one interception, ran 23 times for 149 yards – his third straight 100-yard game. The Buckeyes (7-0, 2-0 Big Ten) are the first ranked team with seven wins. And Ohio State needed every bit of Miller’s help on a wild night when the teams continually traded big play after big play and the Hoosiers (2-4, 0-3) rallied for 15 points in a 35-second span late in the fourth quarter. Each team turned blocked punts into touchdowns in the first half. Indiana scored on TD passes of 76 and 25 yards, a 59-yard TD run and made a field …

Just call this Philly Brown OSU’s top target

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Corey Brown , the Ohio State wide receiver, is often mistaken for another Buckeye, Corey Brown the defensive back. His name might not be distinctive, but his game is. The player dubbed ”Philly” because of his hometown had 12 catches in the 12th-ranked Buckeyes’ 17-16 win on Saturday at Michigan State. To put that into perspective, the most receptions for the season by any Ohio State player a year ago was 14. After months of harping by coach Urban Meyer, it’s clear the Buckeyes finally have a go-to guy out wide. Now Meyer is hoping Brown will break some tackles and improve upon the meager 84 receiving yards he had against the Spartans in Saturday’s game against No. 21 Nebraska.

Lots of things on Meyer’s to-do list this week

His team hasn’t lost and it has a quarterback who has stamped himself as one of the best in the nation. Yet as No. 16 Ohio State readies for its final non-conference game…
