Corey Smith Will Start for Ohio State Buckeyes in 2013

Corey Smith was a junior college recruit from East Mississippi Community College that Urban Meyer brought in to compete for a starting spot right away. Programs like Ohio State don’t bring in junior college athletes to sit the bench. They bring them in because JC kids are proven, mature players who coaches think can instantly help at a position of need. Corey Smith will be that guy for the Buckeyes in 2013. Last season, Ohio State’s receiving corps had flaws in just about every category. There wasn ’t a game-breaker who could take a slant 70 yards for a touchdown. The position certainly lacked reliability, with all having had trouble catching the ball at some point in the season. Sure, maybe Corey Brown was playing a bit out of position and maybe Devin Smith was just young, but this is a group that needs to get better and Corey Smith can definitely patch some holes. Corey Smith has good size and 6’1″, 190 pounds. He possesses the ability to stretch defenses with his speed, …

Accessing the 2014 WR/ATH position

What will Ohio State do for an encore? That’s the question after the Buckeyes landed wide receiver/athletes Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson, Corey Smith and James Clark in the 2013 recruiting class. With 2014 underway, Ohio State has shown no signs of slowing down with 16 offers out. Offensive tackle is the only position with more offers out. Of the sweet 16, 14 appear on the ESPN Watch List with some can’t-miss names among the masses.

Meyer has top-5 haul of recruits at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Coach Urban Meyer was exultant today after signing a class rich in wide receivers along with help up front and in the secondary on defense. Many scouting services rated the Ohio State haul among the top five in the nation. Vonn Bell, an acclaimed defensive back out of Rossville, Ga., was a late addition to the list, choosing the Buckeyes over Tennessee. Unhappy with his receiving corps most of last season despite a 12-0 record, Meyer brought in potential wide-outs James Clark from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., along with native Ohioans Gareon Conley, Darron Lee and Jalin Marshall, and JC transfer Corey Smith. Although still facing NCAA-mandated recruiting limitations, the Buckeyes also landed three prime players out of Texas: QB J.T. Barrett, LB Mike Mitchell and RB Dontre Wilson.

Key seniors set for visits to Ohio State

Ohio State is looking to have its third big recruiting weekend in the last six weeks when it hosts nine official visitors Friday through Saturday. Like before, it’s a weekend jammed with star-quality power from the 2013 class and one the Buckeyes hope puts a bow on an already-strong class. While commit Johnny Townsend can’t make it, a late name has been added in Mississippi State commit Corey Smith and it’s one that should bring some interest, as the former Akron (Ohio) Buchtel standout was an Ohio State fan when he was a senior.
