Miller shows off arm in spring game

CINCINNATI — His greatest asset was effectively removed by the black noncontact jersey and the play calls coming in from the sideline. It didn’t help that Braxton Miller didn’t have a full complement of offensive linemen in front of him, either, which would have made his dynamic legs even more useful had he really been able to turn them loose. But the Ohio State quarterback had his arm and some improved mechanics, and that was all Miller needed in leading his Scarlet team to an easy 31-14 win in the Buckeyes’ spring game on Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium.

Devin Gardner will wear Oregon State jersey in Michigan spring game to avoid wearing red (Dr. Saturday)

Rivalries are more fun the deeper they go. And when Michigan would rather ask Oregon State to use jerseys for the spring game rather than have their quarterbacks wear red, because that is the color of Ohio State, that’s exactly what we’re talking about.

Jersey RB Hilliman plans several visits

With more than two dozen offers, Jonathan Hilliman (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peter’s Prep) has the attention of schools all over the country. He knows some point over these next few months he will have to begin whittling his list down. “I’ll probably take a few more visits, [cut out] the schools — no disrespect — I don’t see myself at,” Hilliman said. “I haven’t narrowed it down yet but I do have certain schools in mind.

Ohio St. is ‘dream school’ for offered ATH

Ohio State is taking advantage of the new reaches of the Big Ten footprint. The Buckeyes offered another East Coast product Thursday, sending out a scholarship to Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph athlete Kiy Hester. Assistant coach Ed Warriner, who recruits New Jersey for Ohio State, was in the school Thursday. Urban Meyer and the staff made several stops to St. Joseph and New Jersey since December. “They came in and been to my school a lot the last month.

Under Armour Spotlight: Cam Burrows

Cam Burrows is a man of few words, preferring to let what he does on the field do the talking for him. That said, Burrows, who was Ohio State’s first commit of the 2013 class on Jan. 19, has been all about recruiting others. He’s headed to Friday’s Under Armour Game with the idea of grabbing more future Buckeyes. Burrows picked up his Under Armour jersey on Oct. 17 along with future Michigan linebacker and high school teammate Mike McCray II.

Under Armour Spotlight: Marcus Baugh

Marcus Baugh has been waiting for Friday’s Under Armour All-America Game since the moment he put on the black No. 12 jersey on Sept. 25. A tight end who has been an Ohio State commit since April 10, Baugh caught 38 passes for 610 yards and added four scores this season for the Huskies. As a junior, he made 30 catches for 528 yards and added seven scores. His high school coach lauded his linebacker skills as well, proving that Baugh is more than just a one-trick pony.

Buckeyes continue to woo Ulmer

The coincidences are getting hard to ignore. Not only does Will Ulmer have similar skills as Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, the two also wear the same jersey number, as both sport No. 5. “It is unique that we both have the same number and play just alike,” said Ulmer, a junior quarterback from Washington (D.C.) St John’s. Ohio State coaches see the similarities. While recruiting senior prospects is the focus this time of year, the Buckeyes still manage to keep in touch with Ulmer, who is expected to be a top member of the 2014 class.

Bama’s defense just as stingy despite NFL exodus

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — That exodus of NFL talent hasn’t made Alabama’s defense any more generous. The top-ranked Crimson Tide still leads the nation in run, pass, scoring and total defense – just like last season. In fact, the numbers are all slightly better than last year’s national title group that drew speculation about whether it was ‘Bama’s best. The Alabama’s doing it despite losing seven starters – three NFL first-rounders and four first-team All-Americans from the defense. Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said it’s just part of Nick Saban’s assembly line of talent. ”They change jersey numbers, not guys,” Dooley said on Monday. ”They sign the same guys every year, just different names. They draft. We recruit. And they get the first 25 picks of the draft.” The Tide (6-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) undoubtedly faces its biggest defensive challenge in Saturday’s visit to quarterback Tyler Bray and the Volunteers (3-3, 0-3). The Vols rank 22nd nationally in total offense and 24th in scoring, compared…
