Blockbuster BCS main event, with iffy undercard

NEW YORK (AP) — The penultimate Bowl Championship Series gave college football a national championship matchup low on controversy and loaded with star power. No. 1 Notre Dame against No. 2 Alabama in Miami on Jan. 7 for the national title. No complaints. That Fiesta Bowl with No. 5 Oregon against No. 7 Kansas State looks good, too. After that, well, you can see why so many fans are so eager to get rid of the BCS. No. 4 Florida goes to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans to face No. 22 Louisville, a Big East team that was unranked as recently as last week. Then again, at least the Cardinals are ranked. Big Ten champion Wisconsin will be the first five-loss team to play in the Rose Bowl when it faces No. 8 Stanford in Pasadena, Calif. Then there’s the Orange Bowl in Miami, where No. 13 Florida State …

Notre Dame takes over No. 1 in major polls

Notre Dame took over the No. 1 spot in both majors polls, which were announced Sunday, but it was not unanimous. The Fighting Irish received all 60 first place votes in the AP media poll, but got 56 of 59 first place votes in the USA Today coaches poll. It is the first time since 1993 that Notre Dame is ranked No. 1 by the AP. Alabama and Georgia are second and third in both polls. Alabama received two first place votes and Georgia one by the coaches. Oregon fell from the No. 1 spot to No. 5 in the media poll and dropped to No. 4 in the coaches poll after its 17-14 overtime loss to Stanford on Saturday. Ohio State is No. 4 in the media poll but not eligible to be ranked by the coaches because of NCAA sanctions. The Ducks and Buckeyes are the only undefeated FBS teams. Kansas State, which lost 52-24 to Baylor, fell from No. 2 to seventh in the AP poll and to eighth in the coaches poll. The rest of AP’s top 10 included No. 6 Florida, No…

BCS roundup: Notre Dame stays unbeaten; Kansas State, Oregon stumble

The only other unbeaten FBS team is Ohio State (11-0), which defeated Wisconsin 21-14 in overtime in Madison, Wis. However, the Buckeyes are ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA sanctions.

No. 1 Oregon tries to avoid Bama-like upset

No. 1 team in the nation, playing at home against a ranked divisional rival with two losses on its record and an elusive redshirt freshman quarterback directing its offense. Sounds familiar. Last week it was top-ranked Alabama losing to No. 15 Texas A&M to shake up the national championship race. This week, new No. 1 Oregon hosts No. 14 Stanford, looking to avoid a repeat. The Tide’s loss has left the Ducks, second in the BCS, and No. 2 Kansas State, first in the BCS, on course to play for the national championship. The Wildcats have what looks like an easier task this week – a game at Baylor (4-5). No. 3 Notre Dame plays Wake Forest (5-5) on Saturday, hoping to stay unbeaten and take one of those spots if the Cardinal or Bears can pull an upset. No. 4 Alabama needs two upsets to get back into the front row…
