Purdue’s week-and-a-half-long search for its 35th head football coach has met its end. Kent State coach Darrell Hazell, the 2012 Mid-American Conference Coach-of-the-Year, has accepted Purdue’s offer to succeed Danny Hope atop the Boilermaker program, sources confirmed to GoldandBlack.com Tuesday night.
Notre Dame still the 1 in AP rankings
NEW YORK (AP) — Notre Dame is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football rankings with nothing left to do but wait to find out who its opponent in the national championship game will be. Toward the bottom of the rankings, there was plenty of movement. Ten Top 25 teams lost this weekend, the most since Oct. 11, 2003. No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia, both easy winners in rivalry games Saturday, held their spots in the rankings and will play for the SEC title in Atlanta next weekend. Ohio State remained No. 4 after completing its perfect season with a victory against Michigan. The Buckeyes (12-0) are banned from the postseason because of NCAA sanctions. Florida moved up a spot to No. 5 after beating Florida State. Four teams from BCS non-automatic qualifying leagues are ranked. No. 14 Ohio State preps for big challenge from UCF
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Quarterback Blake Bortles believes that his Central Florida team has athletes to play on even terms with No. 14 Ohio State on Saturday. Another famous, or infamous, former Floridian agrees. ”They’re a Big Ten talent,” Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said of UCF. ”There’s no question there’s people on that team at certain positions that are as good or better than our (guys). They have five or six NFL players on their roster. That tells you what we’re getting ready to face. We’d better be ready. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Whether it’s typical coach-speak or genuine concern, Urban Meyer is extremely wary of Ohio State’s next opponent, Central Florida. ”A whole different animal coming in here this week,” said Meyer, whose 18th-ranked Buckeyes pounded Miami (Ohio) 56-10 in their opener on Saturday. ”I know this (UCF) team, I know this coach, I know this coaching staff, and we have great respect for everything they’ve done.” Just like the Buckeyes, coach George O’Leary’s team also spanked a Mid-American Conference school from Ohio while scoring 56 points last week.
