Eight days that might define 2014 class

There’s a stretch in every recruiting cycle where the class takes shape. Last year it can be argued a three-week stretch that began in mid-December and stretched to the first week of January was the key time period, as ESPN 150 targets Gareon Conley, Mike Mitchell, Trey Johnson and ESPN 300 lineman Donovan Munger committed. However, nabbing ESPN 150 targets Dontre Wilson and Vonn Bell in the final week, while holding onto ESPN 150 running back Ezekiel Elliott and nabbing four-star recruits James Clark and Corey Smith, was big for the Buckeyes.

ESPN 300 targets: Ohio State

With Monday’s release of the ESPN 300, here’s a look at 10 of Ohio State’s top targets in the 2014 recruiting class. 1. ILB Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga./Liberty County) 6-2, 249 pounds ESPN 150 Rank: 13 Why they want him: With the additions of outside linebacker Mike Mitchell and inside backer Trey Johnson last year, McMillan would lock up a unit that could become a dominant force in the Big Ten. Why Meyer takes patient approach

Some coaches come out in flurry. Some like to wait and close the door behind everyone else. While Michigan and Ohio State go at the recruiting process differently — or more to the point, Brady Hoke and Urban Meyer — both strategies work. Hoke has the No. 1 2014 recruiting class right now. Michigan held the same distinction at this point last year before falling to No. 6. And no one closes quite like Meyer. In the last two months of the third-ranked 2013 recruiting class, he netted ESPN 300 defensive tackle Donovan Munger and ESPN 150 seniors Gareon Conley, Mike Mitchell, Trey Johnson, Vonn Bell and Dontre Wilson along with four-star standouts James Clark and Corey Smith.

Meyer has top-5 haul of recruits at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Coach Urban Meyer was exultant today after signing a class rich in wide receivers along with help up front and in the secondary on defense. Many scouting services rated the Ohio State haul among the top five in the nation. Vonn Bell, an acclaimed defensive back out of Rossville, Ga., was a late addition to the list, choosing the Buckeyes over Tennessee. Unhappy with his receiving corps most of last season despite a 12-0 record, Meyer brought in potential wide-outs James Clark from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., along with native Ohioans Gareon Conley, Darron Lee and Jalin Marshall, and JC transfer Corey Smith. Although still facing NCAA-mandated recruiting limitations, the Buckeyes also landed three prime players out of Texas: QB J.T. Barrett, LB Mike Mitchell and RB Dontre Wilson.
