Ohio State’s spring game to be in Cincinnati

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State’s 2013 spring game will be played on the road. Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati will host the April 13 scrimmage because of renovations at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes went 12-0 under first-year coach Urban Meyer this past season and return 14 starters, including nine on offense. Ohio State will be resurfacing the seating areas at Ohio Stadium, prompting the change of venue to a city where Meyer played football for the University of Cincinnati. He is a 1986 graduate with a degree in psychology. Ohio State and UC played at Paul Brown Stadium in front of 66,319 fans on Sept. 21, 2002, in Ohio State’s only prior appearance in the 13-year-old facility. The work at Ohio Stadium gets under way in January.

Buckeyes don’t believe Illini have their number

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Andrew Norwell has firsthand knowledge of Illinois’ surprising success at Ohio Stadium over the past 20 or so years. He vividly remembers one historic game in particular. The year was 2007 and Norwell was in middle school. His brother Chris was a four-year starter on the defensive line for the Illini, who on that day sprung a stunning 28-21 upset on the top-ranked and unbeaten Buckeyes. ”I was here in orange and blue,” Ohio State’s starting left guard said. ”I was pretty fired up. I was sitting in the Illinois section. That last drive is what I remember most.” Against a Buckeyes team that had dominated all season, the Illini, behind quarterback Isiah ”Juice” Williams, played keep-away with the ball for the final 8:09 to hang on for the win. Now the teams meet again. It might surprise many to know that Illinois has won three of the last five meetings in Ohio Stadium, and seven of 11 dating to 1988. Even though Ohio State …

Ohio State avoids being upset by UAB

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State was expected to cruise past Alabama-Birmingham in its final tune-up before the start of its Big Ten schedule, but the Blazers wouldn’t go down easily Saturday. The slow starts that have plagued the No. 16 Buckeyes in non-conference play continued for the fourth straight week before a 21-point second quarter and just enough defense helped Ohio State avoid a stunning upset with a 29-15 victory before 105,019 less than raucous fans in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes (4-0) trailed for much of the first half but scored three rushing touchdowns to grab a 21-12 lead at halftime and then held off the Blazers in the second half despite being outgained 403-347 in total yards for the game. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was relieved with the win that kept his team undefeated heading into its first road trip of the season next Saturday to Big Ten …

Tressel may return to Ohio Stadium for reunion

Former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel may be planning a return to Ohio Stadium. Tressel, who resigned in May 2011 amid NCAA violations, could attend a 10-year reunion for the Buckeyes’ 2002 national championship, planned for the final regular-season against Michigan. “Obviously, the big question everyone has is will Tress be involved?” former Buckeyes defensive back Dustin Fox told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I don’t know. I would like to think so. It wouldn’t feel the same without him.” Athletic director Gene Smith told the paper that the school would allow “anyone associated with the team to be honored.”
