Buckeyes trying to shake off recent embarrassment
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The word kept coming up again and again as Ohio State players spoke about their most recent outing: Embarrassing. That’s how Lenzelle Smith Jr. and Sam Thompson repeatedly described the 18th-ranked Buckeyes’ effort, mindset, defense and overall performance in Sunday’s 71-49 trashing at Wisconsin on Sunday. Smith said it appeared the Buckeyes felt they could just roll out of bed, warm up a little bit and manhandle the Badgers in Kohl Center, where they lose about as often as coach Bo Ryan cracks a smile. Now a bewildered coach Thad Matta is expecting Ohio State (18-7, 8-5 Big Ten) to regroup and play much better when it hosts another enigma of a team, Minnesota (18-8, 6-7), on Tuesday night in a game which could have major ramifications come tourney time.
Buckeyes edge Northwestern thanks to late surge (The SportsXchange)
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State avoided what would have been a notable upset Thursday, holding off unranked Northwestern for a 69-59 victory. The 13th-ranked Buckeyes trailed the Wildcats by four points with seven minutes to play. The tension was high inside Value City Arena, where Ohio State has never lost to Northwestern. It’s been more than three decades since the Wildcats were victorious in Columbus. Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas helped the Buckeyes (18-6, 8-4 Big Ten) pull away with a game-ending 22-8 run. Thomas scored 15 of his game-high 22 points in that span, and Craft hit a tricky layup to give Ohio State a 61-57 lead with 1:50 to play. “Thomas really took over at the end of the game,” Northwestern coach Bill Carmody said. “In the last 10 minutes, we couldn’t keep the ball away from him. He made plays that good players make.” Thomas connected on two free throws, and Ohio State sophomore Sam Thompson threw down back-to-back dunks following missed 3-pointers…

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Deshaun Thomas scored 15 of his 21 points as No. 3 Ohio State coasted to a huge first-half lead on the way to a 91-45 victory against overmatched Missouri-Kansas City on Friday night. The game was the final tuneup for the Buckeyes (4-0) before their ACC/Big Ten Showdown matchup against No. 5 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night. Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 13 points and LaQuinton Ross and Sam Thompson had 11 apiece as Ohio State experimented with subs for almost the entire second half. Estan Tyler and Thomas Staton each had seven points for the ‘Roos (2-3). The loudest ovation of the night was saved for coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State’s football seniors, who were introduced at halftime on the eve of their big showdown with rival Michigan. Ohio State men's basketball: Selfless Thompson impresses
As a sophomore at Whitney Young High School in Chicago, Sam Thompson was promoted suddenly to the starting lineup after two starters were injured during the run to the state tournament. All he did the rest of the way, his coach said, was defend the other teams’ best player as their school won the championship.
