EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State might have a championship-caliber team if it can get and keep its top players healthy.
(AP) — – Michigan State coach Tom Izzo likes to say his team has seen it all by this point of the season. The eighth-ranked Spartans (24-7, 13-5 Big Ten) have played the fourth-strongest schedule in the country according to the latest RPI rankings, including wins over seventh-ranked Kansas, sixth-ranked Michigan and No. 10 Ohio State. The Spartans also played at ninth-ranked Miami in November and finished tied for second in the Big Ten, which currently boasts four teams ranked in the top 10. Izzo said Tuesday that although this team has been through a physical and mental ringer this season, past experience should bode well for the Spartans this week at the Big Ten tournament and beyond. ”I guess, like probably all coaches, you worry about how many times you can go to the well,” Izzo said. ”I think on the other side of it, it’s still going to benefit you that you can sit in a locker room before a game or talk in a huddle that, you’ve played teams like this, you’ve played…
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former players are sending support from afar, and even Tom Izzo has offered his grudging respect. Michigan is ranked No. 1 in basketball for the first time in two decades, and no matter how much the players downplay it, the spotlight will be shining on Ann Arbor for at least the next few days. Michigan hosts Northwestern on Wednesday night before going on the road for a weekend showdown at No. 3 Indiana. The Big Ten will offer few chances for a breather. The Wolverines are not even halfway through a conference schedule that still includes two games with Michigan State and a trip to Wisconsin. Michigan’s only loss of the season came at Ohio State. The Wolverines host the Buckeyes next Tuesday night.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Deshaun Thomas was so good he made Michigan State’s Tom Izzo want to do something the coach said he has ”never” done.
Losing in the Sweet 16 yielded at least one positive for Tom Izzo, the chance to come home and watch one of his future players win a state championship.
Here's what Tom Izzo had to say after Michigan State's 77-57 win over Penn State on Wednesday at Breslin Center: “I think it's awesome, you know?” No, he was not talking about the game he had just coached.
