Jones eliminates UNC, down to seven

ESPN 60 point guard Tyus Jones (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) has eliminated North Carolina from his list and will consider seven schools, according to a report from Minnesota’s local CBS affiliate. Jones will now decide between Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State, Minnesota and Ohio State. Junior forward Tim Rusthoven made the second of two free throws with no time remaining on the clock, giving William & Mary a dramatic 73-72 victory over UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday at Raiford G. Trask Coliseum. Rusthoven, junior guard Brandon Britt and sophomore guard Marcus Thornton scored 17 points apiece for the Tribe (13-16, 7-10 Colonial Athletic Association). Senior forward Keith Rendleman had a game high 24 points and 11 rebounds for UNC-Wilmington (10-19, 5-12). William & Mary led 20-19 midway through the opening period after Terry Tarpey made a layup with 10:09 remaining. The Tribe went up 34-24 when Thornton converted a 3-point play with 4:53 to go, but the Seahawks led 39-34 at the break after closing the half with a 15-0 run. The Ohio State head coach proved that those wishes were more than just lip-service on Saturday, when the Buckeyes ran UNC Asheville out of the Schottenstein Center in a 90-72 route of the Bulldogs.

While Ohio State’s offense continues to run through its talented trio of juniors, steady production from its lone senior could make coach Thad Matta’s team all the more formidable. Evan Ravenel looks to build on arguably his best effort of the season Saturday as the No. 7 Buckeyes host UNC Asheville. Leading the way for Ohio State (7-1) are juniors Deshaun Thomas , Lenzelle Smith Jr. and point guard Aaron Craft , who’ve all picked up the pace following last season’s Final Four run. Thomas ranks first in the Big Ten with 20.8 points per game while Smith and Craft are averaging career highs of 10.6 and 9.6, respectively. Sophomore LaQuinton Ross has also come out strong with 10.6 points per contest after seeing limited action in 2011-12. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Xylina McDaniel, Waltiea Rolle and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 11 points apiece to lead No. 22 North Carolina to a 57-54 victory against No. 15 Ohio State on Wednesday. Tayler Hill scored 24 points for the Buckeyes (4-2). Hill’s jumper pushed Ohio State ahead 54-51 with 1:26 left, but McDaniel made a jumper and Ruffin-Pratt made two to hand the Tar Heels the victory. North Carolina (7-0) led 29-25 at the break. The Tar Heels opened the second half on an 8-0 run and pushed their advantage to 44-28 on Krista Gross’ jumper with 11:36 remaining. Hill scored 10 points to pull the Buckeyes to 46-38 with 7:58 left and tied the game at 50 on Darryce Moore’s jumper with 2:56 remaining. Ohio State jumped ahead 25-22 on Hill’s jumper with 4:06 left in the first half, but North Carolina ran off seven in a row to lead at the break.
