Why Chris Olave’s Fiesta Bowl misstep caused a ‘ripple effect’ in his Ohio State football career


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Chris Olave spent his sophomore Ohio State football season compiling a memorable highlight reel. The punt block at Indiana. The big touchdown catch against Penn State. The team-best 11 “champion” recognitions. Olave capitalized on the late promise of his freshman season by leading the Buckeyes in receiving yards and touchdown catches. And yet, Olave walked off the field at State Farm Stadium convinced he cost Ohio State a chance to win the Fiesta Bowl. As Justin Fields began to scramble on what proved to be the Buckeyes’ final play, Olave broke off of his route. Fields, however, had already begun his throw to Olave’s former spot, and Clemson’s Nolan Turner picked off the pass in the end zone to seal the Tigers’ 29-23 victory. “It’s the worst feeling in the world,” Olave said after the game.
