STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – John Harrar knew just where to tell his former teammate where to go. For four years, Harrar and Jamari Wheeler were more than just teammates. They were roommates, close friends trying to help Penn State assert itself as a Big Ten contender in men’s basketball. But when their coach was fired, and his interim replacement not retained following the 2020-21 season, both players considered transferring. Wheeler quickly found a home at Ohio State. Harrar stayed to play for new coach Micah Shrewsberry. So as the two approached each other in the postgame handshake line following Sunday night’s 76-64 Ohio State win in the Big Ten opener for both programs, Harrar gave Wheeler a pointed directive. “I told him to go say hi to my mom and my girlfriend,” Harrar said.
