COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day is turning his defense over to a cigar-smoking vegan from the Ivy league known for his reclusive game-planning process each week. “It’s really a lot like that movie, ‘A Beautiful Mind,’” Jim Knowles recently told The Oklahoman, describing the notes, taken while watching film and scattered all over his office. There may have been no defensive coordinator on the market more sought after than Knowles. Ohio State was one of a handful of major programs who needed to fill that position.
