NFL draft: Ohio State’s Devin Smith, Jeff Heuerman taken on Day 2 of NFL draft

While Devin Smith went on standby in the NFL draft’s ready room in Chicago for a day, his Ohio State teammate Jeff Heuerman went fishing out of his hometown of Naples, Fla. But by the end of last night, each had taken the call he sought.

The New York Jets made wide receiver Smith the fifth player taken in the second round. The Denver Broncos made Heuerman, a tight end, the 28th player taken in the third round just before the draft took another hiatus, with rounds four through seven to be conducted today.

OSU prospects Michael Bennett, a defensive lineman, and Doran Grant, a cornerback, had been projected by several analysts as possible second-day picks and appear to be prime candidates for calls today. Also possibilities are versatile receiver Evan Spencer, tackle Darryl Baldwin and linebacker Curtis Grant.
