Ohio State to test limited beer, wine sales at Ohio Stadium this fall

Ohio State will begin a pilot program this fall in which it will begin beer and wine sales in limited locations during Buckeyes football games at Ohio Stadium, athletic director Gene Smith announced Friday. As recently as last August, Smith told CBSSports.com that he’d “rather leave money on the table” than offer alcohol sales to the entire 104,944-seat stadium, although the math of $8 or $9 per beer multiplied by the number of seats is, no pun intended, a staggering figure. Alcohol has been available in suites and club seats during basketball and hockey games at the university’s basketball and hockey arena, The Schottenstein Center, since it opened in 1998. Smith said the stadium program — administered by concessions vendor Levy Restaurants — would be monitored and assessed at season’s end before a decision is made to make alcohol sales a permanent fixture.
